A Deep Breath and a Dive into Autumn

September is a time to take a deep breath before the challenging and increasingly slow-moving end of the year.

In September, we are still very much in the aftermath of an extremely intense solar and lunar eclipse season. The solar eclipse in Leo on August 12 brought us the passing of many famous people, while the lunar eclipse in Pisces on August 28 brought, among other things, dangerous floods. The effects of the eclipses will last at least until September 11, when we experience a New Moon in Virgo. Although Mercury, the planet of thought and communication, is thus given an opportunity for a new beginning, it will not come without challenges.

September also gets off to an irritable start, as Mars, which symbolizes our will and energy, forms an exact square to Saturn on September 1, continuing its affect a few more days afterwards. Mars, representing our personal drive and will, does not function particularly well in Cancer. With Mars also squaring Saturn, we may feel a strong urge to take action, yet at the same time experience stress or external pressure related to family, home, our domestic environment, or our immediate surroundings, in conflict with what we want to accomplish as individuals. You may choose to simply just wait a few days before continuing your effort instead of banging your head against the wall.

One of the most significant dates in September is actually the previous day, September 10, when Venus moves into Scorpio and Mercury enters Libra. Neither planet functions particularly well in these signs, and for that reason they can indicate challenges. In addition, Uranus turns retrograde in Gemini on this day, remaining retrograde until February 8, 2027. The five days before and after Uranus stations retrograde are an especially intense period, during which we may experience unexpected difficulties, particularly involving communication and relationships.

Although Venus and Mercury officially turn retrograde (at the same time!) in Scorpio only in October, Venus’s shadow period begins as early as August 31 and ends on December 15. During the shadow period in September, we will already receive clues about the people, places, situations, and relationship-related matters that we will end up revisiting toward the end of the year. Venus moves into Scorpio on September 10, and its actual retrograde period runs from October 3 to November 13, 2026. Venus is therefore planting seeds already in September that will come to maturity in October and November. Matters particularly related to relationships and communication will show their first signs in September and become considerably more complicated in October.

Mercury’s shadow period begins on October 4 and ends on November 30. The actual Mercury retrograde period in Scorpio runs from October 24 to November 13. Mercury will add further pressure to Venus’s Scorpio relationship issues by bringing communication and financial problems into the picture.

All of the above means that although September is not perfectly clear or straightforward, it is still the best time to take action and begin projects. From October onward, it will be extremely difficult to get anything moving, because five planets will be retrograde at the same time toward the end of the year, slowing life down in many areas.

The Full Moon in Aries on September 26 will bring frustrated feelings to the surface, or draw our attention to one of our less constructive habits. Then, just a few days later, Mars moves into Leo on September 28. Although we may feel that we now want to act quickly and efficiently, Venus and Mercury have other ideas, and the October astrological sky will throw plenty of obstacles into the path of Mars’s war chariot. Mars is also gradually preparing for a very long and challenging retrograde period toward the end of the year, beginning in January 2027.
