The Storm of Changes is Here

Ready or not: Mars Meets Uranus in Gemini During Mercury Retrograde

At the very end of June, Mercury retrogrades in Cancer and remains so for nearly all of July. Many people may experience communication problems, misunderstandings and delays related to technology, travel, commerce as well as family, community, or with their own bodies.

Chiron has also moved from Aries into Taurus. These changes alone would already be enough, but at the same time Mars is drawing closer to Uranus. Storm clouds are gathering, heralding unexpected breakthroughs across different areas of life, technological disruptions, and warlike omens. More on that later in this blog.

Jupiter enters Leo on July 30. Jupiter always amplifies both the positive and negative qualities of whatever sign it occupies. While in Cancer, Jupiter may have increased the desire to build a family or grow closer to one's existing family. It also strengthened the feeling of belonging to a "tribe" and the need to identify with—and especially strongly defend—a particular group or point of view.

Now that Jupiter is moving into Leo for the coming year, its focus shifts more toward individuality, self-expression, and being seen. Taken too far, however, this energy can manifest as excessive self-centeredness, stubbornness, and vanity.

The end of June and the beginning of July set the stage for Mars' transition from Taurus into Gemini, culminating on July 4 as Mars conjoins Uranus—coincidentally the 250th Anniversary of American independence. This is hardly a peaceful omen. Instead, Mars ignites Uranus, and every previous Uranus-in-Gemini cycle has corresponded with war or major conflict in the United States, events that ultimately reshaped the course of the wider world.

However, the New Moon in Cancer on July 14 is both promising and frustrating. A new beginning or renewed effort related to family, security, or defense may initially lose momentum because Mercury—which plays a major role in this New Moon—is retrograde in Cancer. Yet for many, the delays experienced during this period will ultimately prove to be a blessing. We may have to revisit plans we thought were already finalized, only to discover flaws or missing pieces that weren't visible before. This gives us the opportunity to make necessary corrections before moving forward. Another possibility is that, because we are living through such a rapidly changing world, these delays simply grant us a little extra time to prepare emotionally for the changes ahead.

History also points to July 19 as a remarkable date. On this day, all of the outer planets and Jupiter will be at the same degree—the 4th degree—although in different zodiac signs. The Moon in Libra also briefly joins this pattern. The outer planets Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto remain in harmonious aspect with one another through the end of July.

Although this is an exceptionally rare alignment, I don't believe it will be noticeable in the lives of most individuals. However, the news will likely offer hints of the societal changes that are beginning to unfold and that may shape the coming decades. We may not even recognize which specific innovation or event ultimately changes the course of history until years later. Whatever it is, it will almost certainly involve technology and the struggle over who controls it.

It is therefore no surprise that on the following day, July 20, Jupiter in Leo forms an opposition to Pluto in Aquarius. This is a challenging aspect, particularly for those with strong Leo or Aquarius placements. This planetary configuration points to major power struggles. More broadly, it may reflect tension between the individual and the collective. How much are you willing to compromise in order to belong?

The iconflict between the needs of the individual vs. the collective reaches its peak during the Full Moon in Aquarius on July 29. We may witness literal or symbolic power struggles between those in authority and the people. In our personal lives, we are confronted with the question: How far are you willing to compromise in order to belong?

At the end of July, the lunar nodes finally change signs after a year and a half, moving from Virgo and Pisces into Leo and Aquarius. This means that after the end of August, solar and lunar eclipses will occur primarily in Leo and Aquarius for the next eighteen months. Eclipses typically bring major life changes, marking both endings and new beginnings. More on that next month when the eclipses arrive.
