Look to the Past to See the Future

September initially promises us surprising twists—first with the lunar eclipse in Pisces on September 7th, and then the solar eclipse in Virgo on September 21st. But autumn itself began with Saturn retrograding back into Pisces on September 1st. Uranus follows, beginning its retrograde on September 6th, and Neptune then follows Saturn on October 23rd back into Pisces.

A short introduction to the solar and lunar eclipses

I wrote about the eclipses in more detail in my blog, but I will briefly summarize a few things here.

1) The symbols of eclipses

In an astrological chart, eclipses can be studied through the lunar nodes, which show the areas of life where each person’s eclipses occur. Eclipses are not planets, but points in the sky where the eclipses take place, caused by the shadow of the Moon or Earth. They cause the light of the Sun or Moon to disappear from our perspective. The Sun and Moon symbolize our vitality and destiny. Eclipses are famously known for bringing major beginnings, while also ending major things in a dramatic way. They symbolize intense, fateful beginnings and endings of matters, people, and situations. We have less control over these events than we usually do.

2) Timing of eclipses

Eclipses repeat in the same zodiac sign every 19 years. They always occur in pairs, a couple of weeks apart. You may want to think back to what happened in your life 19 years ago, as similar themes may now resurface. Eclipses can already be felt up to a month or a couple of weeks before, and even after, the exact day they occur.

3) The nature of eclipses

The nature of eclipses is unpredictable. Huge energies are at play, and they may either bring new things, bring old things into a new light in surprising ways, or reveal the ultimate outcome only months—or even a year—later. It’s typical that eclipses bring situations where we must act immediately. We have less control over our lives than usual. They remind us to be grateful and humble for the gift of human spirit.

4) Time feels distorted

During the eclipse season, time seems to bend, twist, and warp. Our memory may falter, events may feel closer or farther away than we recall. The laws of nature may seem distorted, and things that normally feel impossible may suddenly seem possible. Sensitive people may experience this period as restlessness, discomfort, or a surreal state. Animals may also sense these energies and behave unusually.

5) The veil between the living and the dead is thin

The veil between the living and the dead is especially thin now. We are reminded both of our mortality and that the world is not only what we see physically—there is also a spiritual inner and outer reality. The time between eclipses is especially active “on the other side”—they may visit, give signs, or remind us of their presence. Mediumship is especially powerful at this time.

6) A good time for spiritual work, but not for manifestation

Eclipses are a good time for stillness, rest, and all spiritual work—but only if the mind is kept free from anger, envy, and other negative states. Eclipses are not ideal for manifestation because of their unpredictability.

7) A good time to let go

If things have been stuck, eclipses will likely open what was locked away or left in the dark, often dramatically, making the meaning completely clear. Eclipses are nature’s own spiritual “deep cleaning”! (This is also an especially good time for a literal deep cleaning at home—it has a purifying effect on both spirit and body.) Eclipses are an excellent time to release situations, relationships, and attachments that no longer serve us. But again, it’s important to keep the motive pure. It is especially important now to keep the ego in check—selfish decisions made during this time may come back later.

Autumn 2025 Eclipses

This autumn’s eclipses affect each sign differently. They bring pressure or surprises—both good and bad—to different areas of life. Think about the themes of both your Sun sign and Ascendant.

  • Aries & Libra: 12th & 6th house themes

Spiritual vs. physical well-being. The “invisible” (spiritual matters) vs. practical implementation that makes them visible. Spiritual health, hidden matters vs. workplace issues.

  • Taurus & Scorpio: 11th & 5th house themes

Networks, friends, and groups vs. personal creativity, romance, and individuality. Your own social life vs. your children’s lives.

  • Gemini & Sagittarius: 10th & 4th house themes

Career vs. home, visibility vs. privacy. Ambition vs. simple living.

  • Cancer & Capricorn: 9th & 3rd house themes

Life philosophy vs. practical matters. Big, new plans vs. the details needed to make them real.

  • Leo & Aquarius: 8th & 2nd house themes

Self-earned money vs. other people’s (e.g., partner’s) money. Your self-worth vs. others’ opinions. Our karmic debts—whether our own or others’ owed to us.

  • Virgo & Pisces: 7th & 1st house themes

Identity vs. partnership. Or outside pressures on your partner that indirectly concern you.

Self-care guidelines during eclipses

Self-care advice for this time: rest, stay quiet, drink plenty of water, and avoid drama as much as possible. Be gentle with yourself and others. Avoid excessive news and people you know will trigger you. Be aware that everyone is under pressure and try to stay at least somewhat conscious of your reactions. If you are one of the lucky ones not personally affected, then support others. Eclipses come and go. Deep peace remains.

Astrology of Autumn 2025

In many ways, the whole autumn—especially after the September eclipses—promises slowing down and looking back on a societal and long-term level for the rest of the year. The outer planets Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus all retrograde back into their previous signs. Jupiter also retrogrades, but stays in Cancer. In the long term, this gives us a partial chance to breathe and reflect, which will be welcome news for many. This year we’ve stepped into a completely new era, but so far we’ve only seen glimpses of it.

At the same time, however, the personal planets—Venus, Mars, and Mercury—continue moving quickly. On a personal level, things may move forward, sometimes urgently, but on a societal and long-term level, plans slow down, stall, or return to spring’s themes. Naturally, this increases individual frustration. Inner urgency meets outer obstacles, and progress is blocked.

As already noted, many people are struggling to navigate this new reality anyway. But the slowdown and review brought by the retrogrades give us an opportunity to reassess.

During autumn, we may not necessarily find a clear new direction, even though we long for certainty. We must navigate with our vision partly obscured, as we don’t yet have all the information and understanding needed to make decisions.

The best advice for this autumn is patience—and to be gentle with yourself and others. This year has already brought tremendous changes, at such a fast pace, that we need time to process them.

In today’s world, we are used to quick answers and clear guidance. But this autumn, the stars will not allow it—they want us to reflect and understand matters from many perspectives. Uncertainty is stressful, of course, but we can also try to surrender to it and learn to listen to the message of the universe—it does not care about human impatience.

Wisdom from Sinuhe for the present moment

My late mother gave me a special edition of The Egyptian by Mika Waltari as a graduation gift. She advised me to read this masterpiece every 10 years. More than 10 years had passed, but I read it again, and I realized its message has not aged—it is still valid today.

We have not changed much from ancient times. Modern people often imagine that we are far wiser and more conscious than before, laughing at the ignorance of the ancients. But when reading Sinuhe, it becomes crystal clear: humans in ancient times were no less intelligent, nor in any way better or worse than us.

“Everything returns to what it was and there is nothing new under the sun, nor does man change, even if his clothing changes and the words of his language also change. Therefore I believe that in future times writing will not change from what has been written until now, because man himself does not change. Around lies, people swarm like flies around a honeycomb, and the storyteller’s words smell like incense as he sits in dung on the street corner, but the truth people flee from. …There are also those who say that what has happened has never happened before, but this is empty talk.”—The Egyptian, Mika Waltari

Even artificial intelligence works only based on the information it is given. Staring back at us is still only our own knowledge, our own understanding, and its limits. There is nothing new under the sun. The great message of astrology is that time is a circle, not an upward arrow. May that bring us wisdom and comfort in these challenging times, which will eventually change.

“But more precise knowledge of everything that is and happens can be gained by reading the fiery writing of the heavens at night. … From the priests I learned that everything that happens below also happens above, and there is nothing so small or insignificant that it cannot already be read from the stars in advance, let alone greater things, if one has learned enough to read the writing of the heavens. This teaching seems to me more believable and understandable than many other teachings about men and gods, and it makes life easy, for it teaches man to understand that everything happens according to an unshakable law and no one can change their fate, for who could shake the positions of the stars and command their movements? The more deeply one thinks, the more this teaching seems the most natural and comprehensible of all, and it corresponds to the faith of the human heart.”—The Egyptian, Mika Waltari

Finally, it should be mentioned that the coming year, 2026, may be the most talked-about year of the century after 2020. The link between these years may not become obvious until decades later, but surely at least Covid and the way it stopped the world in its tracks, a flood of changes began—which we partly see in today’s news.

I wish everyone strength as the evenings grow darker. Let us rejoice in autumn’s colors and enjoy the gifts of nature.
